A .box name has an annual registration, so it moves through a few states over its life. This article explains what each status means and what you can do in it. You see the status on your name overview and in your names list.

Your registration is current. Everything works: your name resolves as an ENS name, and if you have enabled DNS, the website and email layers work too. You can renew, transfer, edit your profile, and manage DNS freely.

In the last 30 days before expiration, your name is flagged as Expiring soon (your names list shows the exact days left). The name still works normally. This is your reminder to renew before it lapses, so there is no gap in service.

If a name reaches its expiration date without being renewed, it stops working: it no longer resolves, and any website or email attached to it goes dark. The name is not gone yet. You have a 64 day recovery window during which only you can get it back.

During recovery, my.box shows a banner and a Recover now button on the name. Recovering a name is the same as renewing it: the button takes you into the renewal flow, and once you pay, the name and its services come back.

While a name is expired, its other actions are unavailable. Transferring, enabling DNS, and changing auto-renew are blocked until you recover the name first, so Recover now is the one action to take.

If the recovery window passes without renewal, the name is released and becomes available for anyone to register again.
