What is a .box name?
A .box name is your identity on the internet. It's an Ethereum Name Service (ENS) name from day one, usable in wallets, ENS-aware apps, and anywhere else that resolves ENS. You can also optionally enable DNS on it so the same name works as a traditional website that anyone can visit from any browser. You own it in your wallet, with no account to sign up for.
Two layers, one name
Every .box name has two possible layers:
ENS: active from the moment you register. Your name resolves to your wallet across the Web3 ecosystem: send crypto to
yourname.box, sign into ENS-aware apps, display it as your identity in wallets, attach an avatar and social profile.DNS: an optional layer you can enable per name. When active, your name works as a traditional website (browsers can visit
https://yourname.box), you can connect an email provider like Google Workspace or iCloud+, and you can manage DNS records.
You can register a name and use it forever with just the ENS layer. DNS is opt-in and can be enabled, disabled, or renewed independently.
What you can do with a .box name
Right after registration:
Set an ENS profile: avatar, bio, links to your social accounts.
Receive crypto at your name across supported chains, instead of sharing a long hex address.
Sign into apps that support ENS as identity.
Once you enable DNS:
Point your name at a website you host anywhere.
Set up email at your name (
[email protected]).Manage DNS records (A, CNAME, TXT, MX, and others).
Forward your name to another URL.
Who it's for
.box is for anyone who wants a name they truly own, one that isn't rented from a traditional registrar or controlled by a platform. It's a particularly good fit if you already hold an Ethereum wallet, or if you want a shorter, memorable identity that works across both Web3 and the traditional web.
You don't need to be a developer. You'll need an Ethereum wallet (see Connect a wallet) and a small amount of crypto or a card to register.
What ownership actually means
Your .box name is an NFT in your wallet. Nobody else can take it away as long as you hold the wallet keys and your registration hasn't expired. You can transfer it to another wallet at any time, or let it lapse if you no longer want it.
.box names have an annual registration cycle. If you enable DNS, that layer has its own separate renewal too. Losing DNS doesn't lose the name; it just deactivates the traditional-website side.
